点评:I'm writing this for the Holiday Lets at Bull Point Lighthouse, owned by Trinity House and advertised via Rural Retreats.
While the cottage itself was lovely, I would recommend against booking to stay here. The private access lane is one mile long and badly overgrown with thorny branches along its entire length; even a small car was scratched on both sides, often squeezing through gaps of just a few feet. My holiday was affected too, as I limited trips to avoid further damage.
When raised, Trinity House seemed to believe the National Trust should cut the lane, which is why they had not arranged it this year. They stated that "the lane is not theirs and they have no responsibility to make alterations to it or control its condition," and were waiting on the National Trust despite hiring someone to do it last year. They even cheekily added that "there are numerous narrow country roads across the UK... with the risk of damage more generally to vehicles ever present... motorists insure themselves against that risk." They offered a nominal goodwill sum with "no liability being accepted in any way," and though they promised a gardener after my stay, their attitude suggests it will happen again.
I do not find this reasonable. As the party with the right of way, Trinity House has the practical responsibility to ensure guests can safely reach the property. I feel like they have misunderstood the difference between land owners and right of way. The National Trust's role as landowners for the right of way is simply to _allow_ access; maintaining the lane is Trinity House's obligation. Their correspondence shows they knew the overgrowth was recurring, yet chose to wait to see if the National Trust did anything rather than ensure the road was passable. A holiday property is only as good as its access, and until Trinity House accepts this responsibility, I would advise looking elsewhere.
