点评:We visited the Appomattox battlefield historical site on May 26-27, 2025. The final battle of the Civil War. Most importantly, this house represents the exact location where the peace treaty was signed between generals Grant & Lee. The first thing you should do when arriving at this historical site is to watch the video on the 2nd floor of the visitor center. This gives you better insight and knowledge when going into the McLean House. Being in that room with the original furniture one can almost hear the discussion going on.
This house has been rebuilt. The history goes that this house and property passed through several owners until 1891, when the house was dismantled in preparation for shipping it to the 1893 Chicago World Exhibition. It did not happen. Later the plan was to ship it to Washington DC and charge entrance fees. The house was all packed for shipping, then funding to complete the project fell through. The dismantled house sat in piles for the next 50 years. Reconstruction on the original site began in 1940, the was halted due to WWII. Finally in 1949 the house was completely reconstructed and open to the public. You can tour the house on your own and it contains many historical objects making it a must see on your list if you are interested in the US history.
