点评:On May 3, 2003 The Old Man of the Mountain lost its long battle with gravity. Almost immediately the question arose as to what to do about it. The Old Man of the Mountain Profile Plaza is the response.
It seems to be an increasingly common problem, but parking is a problem on two levels. First it is fairly far away from the actual plaza. Second, the location of the handicapped parking didn't seem particularly clear (keep driving past the obvious parking area to find it).
There is mention of an Old Man museum, but if there is such a thing it is either very well hidden or was closed for leaf-peeping season.
The plaza consists of five structures with instructions of where to stand so that if the profile on the staff is correctly aligned with the cliff of the mountain you can 'see' what the Old Man looked like. If you never saw the actual Old Man, you won't have a good frame of reference about what you're looking at, so you'll have to have a very active imagination to get a sense of what the Old Man looked like. I would wonder what people will think of this plaza say one hundred years from now, when none of the visitors will have the actual sight for comparison.
Perhaps the real lesson of the plaza is that the treasures of nature are fleeting, and once gone are impossible to replace.
