Very challenging hike, amazing experience with Francis and Fred!

点评：My husband and I hiked the Congo Nile Trail with Go Gisenyi Tours in November of 2024 – the four day, three night, option from Gisenyi to Kibuye. I had been wanting to do this hike for years in celebration of my 50th birthday. It did not disappoint. This is an amazing, very challenging hike with stunning views, thigh cramping hills, amazing people, beautiful birds, staggering agriculture, great food and basic but thorough accommodations. I love solo trekking and originally had thought about hiking alone, just a few introspective days jaunt through the jungle. Then my husband wanted to join, and we decided to get a guide so we could immerse ourselves in the culture. We had an amazing adventure, and we are so thankful we booked with Go Gisenyi tours – they made our experience so much better than I could have imagined.
Francis, the owner, was very kind and easy to work with: he provided helpful information to assist in planning the most effective trip and got us plenty excited before we even got there. My bank put up some roadblocks for payment and it took me more than a week to get him the down payment. He was patient and helpful the whole time. In the weeks before our trip he gave us updates on the weather, let us know what conditions to expect, and sent tips on what to bring and how to pack. He met us in person in Gisenyi to welcome us and share stories even though he wasn’t our tour guide. He communicated with our guide during our adventure to make sure we were progressing well and enjoying ourselves and followed up with me after our hike. He was great to plan with!
Our guide Fred was wonderful. He was patient, smart and interactive. He taught us about plants, animals and wildlife, discussed Rwandan culture and was interested in our country’s traditions and practices. He coached us on some basic phrases in Kiyarwandan to greet and interact with locals. He took us up and down some of the steepest hills I’ve even seen and always had patience and a smile when I needed to catch my breath. We live at sea level so despite lots of training, the elevation made this hike very challenging for me, so Fred was very adaptive to the route and tried to guide us through less steep areas. We also got caught in a heavy rainstorm, and although we all had raingear, we decided to call it a day after a couple of miles of trudging through the beautiful slick red mud. Fred had a plan B ready, and we were zipping the rest of the way to our accommodations on moto taxis very quickly. He also helped us arrange last-minute travel back for Kigali after our original plan ended us being costlier than we had prepared for. It was a pleasure to spend time with Fred and we really appreciate his company and guidance; he is a treasure!
Go Gisenyi can arrange different accommodations based on your price point. We chose basic accommodation which included the Cyimbiri basecamp the first night, right on the shores of Lake Kivu. They served the best Fanta I’ve ever had in my life, and offered delicious family style food, good beds and a lukewarm shower, which was fine after a hot day of hiking. Be sure to use the mosquito nets: it’s right on the water with lots of buzzing insects! The second night we enjoyed Kinunu guest house, which is a base camp as well as a vacation destination. The service and restaurant were exceptional, and we also really found value and enjoyment in an add-on coffee tour and tasting (Boneza single source Rwandan coffee - delicious!!). The rooms here were modern and lovely with big soft netted beds and nice warm showers. Breakfast included yummy African tea. The third night we enjoyed Bumba base camp after a soaking day of hiking and moto taxiing adventure. Basic roomy bed with requisite mosquito net, and they bring a tub of hot water for bathing. This spot was high in elevation and chilly in the evening. Pulling our chairs around a roaring fire to share food and stories was both cozy and heartwarming. Be sure to pack some lightweight warm clothes – I had a merino wool hat and gloves that kept me warm. I even slept in the hat.
