Kykuit, The Rockefeller Estate的点评
点评：My husband and I went to Sleepy Hollow by 45-minute train ride from Grand Central Station in May. Easy to find--the train takes you right to the Sleepy Hollow Station and with an Uber driver we visited the Sleepy Hollow cemetery where Washington Irving and other luminaries dating back to the 1600s (!) are buried. It was drizzly that day so the atmosphere did remind us of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow with the Headless Horseman.
The Kykuit estate is quite a surprise. The mansion from the 1920s holds a remarkable art collection--both Asian and contemporary--and is filled with wonderful stories, thanks to our highly informed guide, Carol. As a former Stanford professor specializing in Sui and T'ang dynasty history, I thoroughly enjoyed Carol's depth of knowledge of art history. (She majored in it!) And the stories of the Gilded Age are jaw-dropping!! John D. Rockefeller was so filthy rich that he hired 200 people to move dirt from below near the train tracks so his house could be built on a higher hill. He also had the train tracks moved so he could have a better view.. Seeing is believing--and the world of the rich and arrogant will remind you that today's plutocracy Kymay simulate that of 100 years ago!!
