点评:What first strikes you about the red sandstone St Mary Magdalene Church (now known as Taunton Minster since March 2022) is its very tall tower (158 feet high to the top of its pinnacles), particularly when seen from the town centre down Hammet Street. The church's original tower was built at the beginning of the 16th century, with the money for its construction coming from Taunton's wool trade, but the tower you see today is actually a replica as it was rebuilt in the middle of the 19th century by Sir Gilbert Scott (who was also the architect of the Albert Memorial in London). Inside the church there are quite a few statues, most of which date from the 19th century restoration, and memorials; most notably the south aisle, which is also known as Soldiers' Corner. Soldiers' Corner is dedicated to the Somerset Light Infantry and there is a Book of Remembrance of those who died during the Second World War along with many other plaques. The East Window (which was presented in 1912) is special in that it was paid for by the First Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry with each member of the Regiment donating one day's pay towards its cost. The figures depicted in the window have an association with either the Regiment or Taunton. If you are visiting Taunton this is one place which should be on your "to do" list.
