点评:A Warning to Pilgrims Buying Perfume Near the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah
I want to share my experience to warn other visitors and pilgrims about my purchase from Al-Fakhamat Al-Mutajaddida (الفخامة المتجددة), a standalone perfume shop on the hotel and shopping side opposite the women's entrance to Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, between Gates 330 and 331.
Please be very careful if you visit this shop.
I purchased two small bottles, each containing 12ml of a very thick, dark brown musk oil. The seller described it as original Hajar Al Aswad musk, claiming it was exceptionally rare and exclusive, had been aged underground in a sealed metal container for years, and was used by prominent sheikhs.
The sales approach also concerned me. I was initially quoted 1,200 SAR for just one 12ml bottle. After buying some other perfumes and negotiating, I was offered two 12ml bottles for 1,100 SAR in total.
When I hesitated and said I did not have enough money, the salespeople encouraged me to say Bismillah and told me to take the perfume and pay later. I found this particularly uncomfortable. Religious language and apparent generosity should never be used in a way that makes customers feel pressured into an expensive purchase.
The oil had a very strong, animalic opening, followed by a deep earthy scent that softened into a warm musk. It was certainly distinctive, but the smell, thickness and longevity do not establish its ingredients, origin or authenticity.
I was given no receipt, ingredient list, certificate of authenticity or documentary evidence to support the extraordinary claims made about the product.
I cannot independently prove what the oil contains or whether it was genuinely aged as described. But I paid 1,100 SAR based largely on claims that I had no way of verifying.
What particularly troubles me is the apparent sales approach: very high initial prices, elaborate stories about rare and prestigious products, and persuasive language that can make customers feel they are being offered something extraordinarily special.
I am not claiming that every product or every salesperson is dishonest. I am sharing what happened to me so that other pilgrims can make informed decisions.
My advice is simple:
- Do not be impressed by stories of rarity, underground ageing or prestigious customers without evidence.
- Do not assume that religious language means a seller or product can be trusted.
- Ask for a receipt and written details of the ingredients and origin.
- Compare prices with other shops before agreeing to buy.
- Never let anyone make you feel obliged to purchase, regardless of how generous or persuasive they appear.
I visited Madinah for worship, not to spend a large amount of money on a product whose authenticity I could not verify.
I sincerely wish someone had warned me before I walked into this shop. I hope this account helps another pilgrim avoid the same experience.
