点评：This protected area of redwoods is beautiful. Huge stumps remain from the cutting of original growth redwoods in the last century . Paths take you through the zoo area, through redwood stands as if you were deep in the forest and there is an amazing Sky Walk that looks like something where the Ewoks lived in Star Wars.
The animal displays are nice, clean and the animals are well cared for. This is not a large zoo, but what you get to see is great. There are flamingos, a brown bear, bald eagles, spotted owl, otters, wild pigs from S. America, trout and salmon habitats and some animals you can pet. There is a clear tube where children can move through and be surrounded by river otters at play in their water environment--very cool.
The setting is surrounded by second growth redwood trees that tower above you. The Sky Walk is an elevated path through the trees about 25 feet high and very secure. There is an optional section that features a suspension bridge, which is very safe, but maybe not for persons fearful of heights. It was really a fun thing to do.
The property was originally gifted to the City of Eureka by a lumber baron who had the forethought to set aside a part of the forest for future generations. It is a great place to walk, sit and enjoy, take children, etc.
There are very nice restrooms and a great cafe on site along with a very well designed and stocked gift shop. Of course, the gift shop is also the exit and there are some very unique items . My favorite was the bright yellow banana slug slippers!!
