Mother Nature Can Be a Beast

点评：Xflats has a reputation as among the finest locations to hunt for permit, the fish of a thousand casts. I’ve caught five and have caught the fever but Mother Nature can get in the way. Terrible winds made finding, seeing and casting to the few that we saw, difficult each of our five fishing days. One day the “harbor master” shut everyone down. Safety first and for good reason. In four days of fishing I cast to very, very few permit.
The lodge is comfortable and the meeting/dining area quite nice. Lunches and dinners were quite good and if you like eggs and bacon in one form or another, so was breakfast. A bit of fresh fruit was always available but I’m talking bites and not plates of fruit. On day three I asked for an alternative, perhaps yogurt and dry cereal and I did get a second option on day five. Many reasons why I choose not to eat eggs or bacon very often if at all back home.
The cutest of the lodges several dogs ate and carried off my fishing boot one evening! The lodge made it right immediately, fortunately having a spare pair I could use the last two days and then appropriately comped my bar bill at the end of the trip.
Astonishingly we were all asked to tip the guides “as usual” for the non fishing day. “They depend on the tip money.” The guests all, as far as I know, declined to do so and nothing more was said. I think any social welfare program is exclusively up to the lodge and not the guests.
Folks who fished for bonefish or small tarpon caught a few despite the wind and one grand slam was accomplished.
