点评:We spent the day in Arles on May 27, 2025. After seeing the various Roman remains, we visited a nearby railyard that was recently converted into a big, cultural center called Luma and has as its centerpiece a striking mirrored tower by famous American architect Frank Gehry. You can actually walk there from the center of town, which is good because parking is a pain. We were there on a Tuesday and were surprised how deserted it was. It’s billed as a 27-acre campus for exhibits, workshops and seminars, but where was everybody? On our 4-week road trip through France we encountered several big new buildings (or restored older ones) with splashy advertising about how it will be an important center for this or that. Instead they were empty. It seems France can create these spaces but then doesn’t know what to do with them. We felt the same way about La Villette in Paris, the much-heralded cultural and science center that, to us, looked greatly under-utilized (and sadly deteriorating). But it was still May in Arles, so I’m hoping Luma lives up to its hype and is a huge hit when the busy Summer season arrives.
