点评:The dreaded ripoff happened to us, despite trying to be cautious…used the official taxi queue line for a driver. We asked the taxi driver at the airport if he accepted credit cards just to be sure. He said don’t worry, we can talk about it in the car. Lots of commotion so we got distracted. Of course, we were very tired from a long trip and should have realized ahead was happening.
Halfway on the ride to Athens from the airport the driver said there was a problem with the battery in the credit card machines. They were being fixed all weekend and he only took cash. But don’t worry he will drive us to the ATM machine so we can take our cash to pay him. And he suggested we take some for ourselves since this problem was bound to be happening all over Athens this weekend.
Took out cash to pay him. Of course no small bills from the ATM and the driver didn’t have much change. Only a 10 euro bill which meant he gave himself an extra 5 euro tip on top of an 85 euro ride that we were told should have only been 60 euro at most. And on a calm traffic day Saturday morning.
Moral of the story, be careful. Bring small bills and insist on knowing what to expect before riding. In a taxi.
I asked if he was a free now driver since it was advertised in the taxi. I could pay that way. He explained that since he started as a taxi I couldn’t pay him through free now (like uber in Greece). I don’t even know what to believe but I’m very upset.
