Wonderful, Small Museum
Ticonderoga Heritage Museum的点评
点评：I'd visited back in '14, but don't think I toured as it was near closing ... just got some directions. This time I made sure I reserved plenty of time. It's a bright, airy museum with rooms devoted to different aspects of the local area: from the canal and river; early power sources (from water and electricity), the emerging industries from grist and sawmills, to mining, etc. There's also a room dedicated to the famous yellow Ticonderoga pencil. While manufactured in New Jersey, it was named for Ticonderoga as the pencil company's founder's Father had fought at Ticonderoga during the Revolution. There's also history about graphite and clay used to make the famous lead in the pencils, encased in cedar wood.
But my favorite aspect of the museum are the dozens of scale models of various businesses, farms, homes, hotels, etc., that have featured in the town's history. They are so beautifully made. The young woman at the gift shop told me that they were all created (and are still maintained), by a local woman who is now in her 90s!! Would I ever have loved to learn model making from her. Her models would easily hold ground with some of the finest model RR model makers.
