The Speed," as Louisville natives call it, is a world-class art museum in every sense of the word. The building itself is amazing, light, spacious, futuristic on the outside but alllll about the art on the inside. The areas for different eras and types of art are well thought out and have plenty of things to look at - without seeming cluttered or crowded. Be sure to get a map when you buy your admission tickets. The museum is spread out on multiple levels, but what is on each level is clearly marked and easy to find.
We were in town, spent an entire day at The Speed, and were fortunate to be able to view the special exhibition Brilliant Exiles: American Women in Paris, 1900-1939. I had no idea there was an entire era of American women who went to Paris and made their own way, by their own rules, in the fast-evolving art and culture scene in the 20s and 30s. The detailed information with each object was especially well done.
There are an adequate number of benches in some areas when your feet need a break, but for some refreshment it's hard to beat the on-site Marigold Cafe. Great selection of sandwiches and coffees, all freshly made and reasonably priced.
Our only complaint is that there needs to be larger/more noticeable signs for the entrance during their outside landscaping project - we ended up circling around several times before someone pointed us in the right direction.
