点评:We made the pilgrimage to Groundhog Day as a birthday celebration and had a great time! Supposedly this year was the largest event they’ve had, and I’m sure the event being on the weekend contributed to this.
Here are a few tips/notes worth sharing:
-Lodging should be your first concern. We ended up staying ~40 minutes away from Punxsutawney, but we were still lucky to find this room a few months prior to 2/2.
-We checked out Punxsutawney on 2/1 to avoid the crowds post-Phil and so we could head back home after being up early for the event. I highly recommend this, as there is a good energy in town the day prior but it’s not too wild, and you can see pretty much everything in the town in an afternoon/evening. It is small! There was a nice little street fair with music, shops, and food/drink that we spent most of our time at.
-We got to the Walmart shuttle location right at 3am and the lot was already full. We were instead routed to Punxsutawney High School and even then we got one of the last spots there. Couldn’t imagine where people found parking by 4/5am. The shuttle line at the high school was far more reasonable than the massive line at Walmart, so we were actually glad Walmart was full with hindsight. We had to stand in line maybe 25 minutes to be shuttled to Gobbler’s Knob. Didn’t seem like pre-paying for our shuttle passes would have allowed us to cut the line.
-We arrived at Gobbler’s Knob a bit after 4am and the crowd was already gathering at the stage. We were maybe 20-30 rows back in the general admission area, but the hill is sloped and there was a large video board so our view was fine. By 4:30-5:00 if you are near the front and go to use the restroom or visit anything else onsite, you WILL lose your spot. There is also a VIP area at the front of the stage that is ticketed… it was sold out but I definitely would have purchased this if I knew about it in time.
-Terrible coffee for sale there, but a good donut. Bring a thermos with whatever hot beverage you like, as well as a snack if you think you’ll be hungry.
-Waiting the 3+ hours for Phil was bearable. The weather wasn’t too bad, but LAYER UP! The biggest lifesaver was a ski mask that kept my face warm for the winds. Good warm socks/boots are highly recommended too. The stage entertainers kept things moving with songs and other performances that everyone was participating in good fun. As the morning goes on, the crowd grows more and more restless for Phil. Truly surreal but so much fun. The cheers when he gets pulled out of his stump are fantastic.
-The worst part absolutely was the shuttle process back to town. We left the stage area nearly immediately after Phil’s reading, but a sea of people stopped in their tracks greeted us at the entrance waiting for the busses. After waiting in this crowd for about an hour with minimal movement, we decided to make the trek back to the high school on foot… 2 miles (mostly downhill luckily), but still a trek. There simply was no order with the shuttles back to town because it was so many people. The walk also made me realize I couldn’t imagine walking UP to the Knob early in the morning… not for the weak.
The short version is: plan ahead, get there early, and have a great time! Would have gotten to the shuttles even earlier if we did it again, but we had absolutely no regrets about this bizarre piece of Americana.
