点评:Curiosity got the better of us. After a short excursion to Hoover Day continued our journey north towards Las Vegas. Next stop Lake Mead National Recreational Area. Prior to departing California on our trip, the local television stations provided daily reports of drying up rivers, lakes, and pond throughout the Southwest. Lake Mead was no exception. Having been to this recreation lake on numerous occasions in the past, these reports were hard to believe. As we were in the vicinity, had to verify the situation. First stop, the Lake Mead Visitor Center, for the latest information pertaining to the Lake. This center is staffed by volunteers and rangers with a plethora of information concerning the lake. All employees were extremely helpful and assisted us with planning a short visit to this magnificent lake. Maps, brochures, and visitor permits are available. Located within the Center is an exhibition hall with a relief maps of the lake, and information pertaining to the flora and fauna that can be found in the area. I found the exhibit on local geology fascinating. A short film entitled “Life in the Desert” is enlightening. If you desire to take home a souvenir of your Lake Mead trip, a gift shop, with an abundance of book pertaining to the park, Native American art, jewelry, and crafts as well as tee shirts and other items are for sale. This Visitor Center with a large parking lot, clean restroom, and helpful staff is worth visiting. After visiting the center, ventured to Lake Mead, were we found the reports of Lake Mead drying up to be creditable. Water level is extremely low, and this one great recreational park is slowly fading away. Recreational water sports have been curtailed or no longer authorized due to the current situation. Hopefully, rain will return to this area and refill this lake.
