点评:After reading a novel set at The Cloisters, I decided to visit on a recent weekend visit to NYC. As NY state residents, we "paid what we wished", so about $20 each. The place was very full, but it seemed oddly hushed. The stunning architecture demanded a certain reverence. We skipped the regular tour, but did catch up with the group on several occasions and enjoyed hearing the guide's comments in a few areas of the Cloisters.
Lunch at the cafe was enjoyable, a bit overpriced as you would expect from a museum cafe. Yet the surroundings were lovely and we would have loved to stay there longer but were mindful of the many people waiting to find a seat.
The heritage gardens are very interesting and contain a few examples of naturally occurring poison plants.
The "please do not touch" advisory is maddeningly difficult to adhere to. How can you not want to reach out your hand and let your fingers rest on an artifact from the 1300's?? But we were respectful of the policy - as closely as possible. To think that these statues, crypts, chapel pieces were created hundreds and hundreds of years ago is awe-inspiring.
It was a stunningly beautiful fall afternoon and the overlooks of the Hudson River made for some breathtaking photos. For our group, this was a picture perfect way to spend a precious fall afternoon.
