点评：Construction of the castle of Ventadour is likely to have started at the end of the twelfth century. The square keep was probably erected first, followed by the north east corner tower. The north west tower with its two guard posts was built much later, in the fourteenth century.
After centuries of abandonment the ruined stronghold is purchased by Pierre Pottier in 1968 with the help of a television prize for endangered heritage. With the help of hundreds of volunteers he starts the reconstruction of the fortress.
Mister Pottier has passed away and is commemorated in the chapel of the castle but his work continues to this day.

Honor and praise are due to mister Pottier and the countless volunteers whose efforts have preserved Ventadour castle for future generations.
Visitors should be aware that they are entering a construction site : Rooms are unfurnished and construction materials are stocked in several places. The attic above the great hall is currently used as dormitory for the workers.
My advice is to have a good look at the reconstruction drawings, scale models and pictures of the reconstruction work in the rooms adjecent to the great hall before wandering around the castle.
Afterwards you can ask one of the volunteers on site for a guided tour. Our guide was first and foremost a craftsman, meaning that obviously his explanations were focused on the reconstruction work rather than the historic evolution of the fortress – something I understand but regret.
I agree with the use of contemperary materials for cost purposes but I am opposed to placing concrete stairs where previously there were none or to enlarging existing windows.
In spite of the above remarks I still encourage passers by to make a stop at Ventadour castle, be it foremost to enjoy a picknick in the bailey and take some beautiful pictures afterwards.
