A large and impressive church with a lot to enjoy
Ledbury Parish Church St. Michaels and All Angels的点评
点评：At the top of Church Street, you can't miss this church, with its separate bell tower. It is large, reflecting the prosperity of Ledbury when it was built.
The chancel still retains its round Norman arches and windows. There are several impressive memorials here. The Skynner Family were important C16th merchants with a suitably impressive memorial with the kneeling figures of the parents and their ten surviving children.
Near it, looking out from under a canopy is a C17th vicar.
On the floor is the lovely alabaster effigy of John Hamilton Martin who died as a baby in 1851. This was the work of Thomas and Mary Thornycroft and was shown at the Great Exhibition that year.
Most of the stained glass windows are the work of CE Kempe, The wonderful Heaton window in the north wall was installed in 1991 and is the work of Scots born artist John Clarke. It is dedicated to Arthur and Biddy Heaton. They were both active members and benefactors in the town. It is a dramatic abstract interpretation of the Benedicite, which talks of all creation praising God, along with images reflecting the couple's long involvement with the community. It repays time studying as there is a lot of detail.
There are two paintings of the Last Supper in the church. That above the altar was painted by a local artist. At the back by the north door is a C16th painting which came from the workshop of Titan. Titan would have composed the painting and may even have done some of the underpainting. It was completed after his death by different artists in his workshop, which explains the different styles of painting. The painting was donated to the church in 1909. It was only after it was restored a few years ago that the significance of the painting was discovered.
This is a fascinating church which repays visiting - there’s a lot to see and discover here.
