An outstanding opportunity to capture portraits of the beating heart of Sri Lanka

点评：I often find that tours—even photographic tours—leave me feeling like I have missed the heart of a place because we haven’t spent time with local people. Most tours focus on landscapes or wildlife, so the opportunity for a bespoke tour focused on people was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. We arranged the tour with Saman Weeratunga through a process of online discussion of what photographic opportunities there were and the time we (there were two of us) had to spend in Sri Lanka. He also assisted us in selecting hotels for our trip. We settled on eleven days and, looking back, that was probably ambitious, given all the places we wanted to go and the people we wanted to photograph, but that was our issue, not Saman’s.
Saman met us first thing our first day and whisked me away to a local fishing village and market before we left on our first day’s drive. Saman was professional, an exemplary driver and extremely attentive to the two of us and our needs. He also has a great sense of humour! He made sure that we saw/photographed what we had arranged, but he also provided opportunities to stop and take photos when something presented itself. Best of all, he was/is a very personable young man, very knowledgeable about photography, and clearly has built a strong bond/trust with the people he has been photographing for years. Best of all, he arranged our shoots so that each were private to allow us to develop a rapport with our subjects. He was also helpful in suggesting ideas for our shots until we loosened up a bit at each shoot. Saman was also understanding when we opted NOT to go on a part of the tour that he had planned. (Sometimes older people need to rest so that they can be ready to go the next day.)
While the photoshoots were all wonderful, some of my favourite memories will be the chance encounters we had along the way. Overall, I came home with some lovely photos that will keep Sri Lanka, its people, and especially Saman, alive in my memory for years to come.
