点评:Both amazing and frustrating but overall: amazing.
Here's what was amazing:
1) The exhibits overall. Especially the tunnels - I could have spent all day in the tunnels looking at the fish overhead (which felt like they were suspended above us) and around us.
2) The penguin experience. Just pay for it; worth it!
3) The penguins in their exhibit. So crazy fun to watch!!!
4) Did I mention the exhibits? When we travel we see aquariums (we're fish people) and this one is #1 so far. Tops the one in Norfolk, VA by just a bit (that one is also fabulous but this one had some additional things that put it over the top).
5) You can pet sharks. S.h.a.r.k.s. Amazing!
Tips:
1) If you don't like little kids (and in all honesty, small humans under 5yo drive us crazy) maybe don't go on a weekend. We arrived at 10am on a Sunday and I'm not kidding you when I say the first 30 minutes of our visit were sheer frustration because there were on average 2-3 kids under 4 for every single adult around us (some had 1; some had 5).
Until the frog exhibit (which has a kid playground so people stopped and let their littles burn off energy, at which point it thinned out a lot), we fought for space in front of the exhibit because littles were running, screaming, jumping, and crying in strollers around us.
Kids will kid. Crabby old people will crab (us). It is what it is.
We noticed that by noon it was quieter so if you're stuck being in town on a weekend, just go after noon to avoid the chaos.
2) The website didn't let us book the penguin encounter along with our behind-the-scenes tour, so when they opened at 9 I called over and they said the 12pm was wide open (?) so we booked over the phone. Don't trust the website if it's not available - call. They're so friendly.
3) Coffee at the cafe is $5 a cup and we dumped it the second we got it. Ish: 80% grounds.
4) Contrary to what you will read online, there is no coat check in the lobby. Know this. We would have left our coats in the car if we had known.
5) Parking was tough for us to find. It's off the traffic circle. It's safe and moderately priced ($12/6 hours). The kiosks want cash - bring cash (and ones!).
6) The behind the scenes tour is fun. Definitely not for anyone under 4th grade though. We had a 2nd or 3rd grader in our tour and while quiet and good, she was pretty bored at times.
7) Crawl through that tunnel in the big room after the white alligator. Stand up in the middle.
