We almost died on this road
Kahekili Highway的点评
点评：Scariest experience of my life. We were within an inch of death. That’s not an exaggeration. Like others, Google Maps took us on this route without any warnings, though we found out later our car rental company prohibits people from driving on this road.
Most of the Kahekili Hwy in Maui is a barely 1 lane dirt road with no guardrails & numerous blind hairpin curves, and sheer drop-offs up to a few hundred feet.
There is no where to turn around once you’re on this road, which took us about 2.5 hours to go 12 miles.
There’s cars going both ways, so you have to back up around these sheer cliffs, unable to see.
If you have to take it, DO NOT DRIVE COUNTERCLOCKWISE as you’ll have to drive on the outside instead of hugging the mountain.
We almost went over the edge at one point when the driver on the inside lane tried to flag us around him. We had to actually stop, back up several feet and have him scoot his car directly against the mountain or we would’ve gone over the edge.
I talked to my friend who grew up in Maui and she said we were crazy and the locals don’t even go on that road.
I’m normally talkative, but was so scared I was silent almost the entire time.
There are other places to enjoy the break taking scenery. Just don’t do it on this road!
