点评:We've been here twice.
Craters of the Moon is an area of recent (2000 years ago) remains from volcanic explosions. It is over 700,000 acres - right off U.S. 20 - yet with a loop road that is roughly 7 miles, one can see most of the main attractions. You do want to allow at least half a day to see this (we were here almost 5 hours the first time, and nearly 4 hours the second time).
When you come it, the best thing to do is go to the visitor center - get a map, ask questions, watch the movie in the theater. If you want to explore the caves, you need a flashlight and a permit. If not, you're good to go.
There are about 6 or 7 different trails through various distinct lava formations ranging from an easy, flat trail that is about 0.3 miles long, to hefty multi-mile hikes at elevation. I will say that one of the most fun "hikes" was to the top of inferno cone. Only about a quarter mile - but 10% incline or so all the way - great view from the top.
There's no tree cover, of course, so if you go soon - it could be blazing hot. We went in early June.
If you go mid-day, take a lunch, there are no food facilities there. On our first trip, we stopped in Arco and got drinks and sandwiches.
