点评:This is the main attraction when visiting Loro Piceno. It’s an imposing structure, built on top of the old Roman walls. At some points, it soars above the ground.
Built around the mid-13th century, the medieval remains of the ancient castle are largely intact. Apparently there were once more towers but there are still 4 standing today - the Hanging Tower, the Crenellated Tower, the Mozzata Tower and the Victory Tower.
It is sometimes possible to climb the Victory Tower, from which you get 360 degree views from the Adriatic to the Sibylline Mountains.
The Hanging Tower intrigued us. It’s only a small tower, supported on three pillars that jut out from and overhang the castle wall. The large wooden beam that supports it was used for executions and men were hanged from here. It would have been a very public and gruesome sight.
In later years, at the end of the 14th century, the castle housed the Palazzo di Giustizia, Palazzo dei Priori, prisons, a well and a windmill and, later again, in 1693, the monastery of Corpus Domini, was founded. Its structure was merged into the castle complex. The original convent kitchen and pharmacy can still be visited and amazingly, is appears virtually untouched. We were fortunate to be able to visit this part of the castle. It was absolutely fascinating. Normal it’s only open from Fri-Sun in the mornings but we happened to meet one of the ladies who helps at the monastery and she very kindly offered to show is through.
