Opt for a Jeep Instead

点评：My wife and I visited Vieques and had several vehicle options: a golf cart, UTV, or a rental car like a Jeep. Based on our Airbnb host's advice (golf carts are unsafe on the island's steep hills), we opted for a UTV—specifically, a Kawasaki Mule—thinking it would be the best way to explore the island and access harder-to-reach beaches.
While the UTV did allow us to visit one beach via a narrow road, the experience was disappointing overall. The first UTV we rented had extremely spongy brakes, making the island’s steep hills treacherous. Even with the brakes fully depressed, the vehicle continued to roll downhill. Concerned for our safety, we returned it to the rental shop and swapped it for another Mule. The replacement had marginally better brakes, but the parking brake was unreliable. The owner gave us a rock to place under the tires when parked—a clear indication of the vehicle's poor maintenance.
The noise level while driving the UTV was high, and both vehicles we tried had inoperable seatbelts. Driving at night added to the challenges: the windscreen made it nearly impossible to see when oncoming headlights or rain obscured our view. We often felt we were driving on blind faith, praying nothing—like a horse or person—would cross our path.
In hindsight, we would have rented a Jeep. It would have been safer, quieter, and ultimately less expensive. If you’re planning to explore Vieques, I strongly recommend going with a Jeep rental instead.
