点评:Located on Barnard Street just off Telfair Square in Savannah’s Historic District, the Telfair Academy was opened in 1886 as the first public art museum in the southern United States. It is probably most popularly known as the home to the Bird Girl statue made famous by the book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. My wife and I visited the museum on a Saturday during May 2025.
Originally placed in Bonaventure Cemetery, the Bird Girl statue was moved to Telfair Museums for safekeeping and now has its own special room. However, if that is all you go to see there you are definitely missing out, as the museum houses an impressive collection of 18th and 19th century American and European fine and decorative arts. Two galleries you absolutely should not miss are the Rotunda Gallery and the Sculpture Gallery. The impressive size and amazing architecture of these galleries are breathtaking.
The building (the former mansion of the Telfair family) was beautiful, the staff was friendly, the museum was easy to navigate, the artwork was tastefully displayed, and it won’t take you days to go through it all. We enjoyed our visit to the Telfair Academy and can confidently recommend it to others.
