点评:It took me an hour to walk along the Granite Way shared foot path and cycle track, climbing steadily on a gradient of 1:75, from the recently re-opened railway station at Okehampton to the impressive, disused, double-track lattice girder viaduct which spans the deep valley of the West Okement River just to the west of Meldon Quarry.
It was worth the stroll along the tarmac-surfaced path to cross this incredible feat of Victorian civil engineering, which was built by the London and South-Western Railway Company in 1874 to carry trains along its main line between Exeter and Plymouth via Okehampton and Tavistock.
As well as walking over the top of the viaduct, two, purpose-built viewing platforms have been constructed on the abutments which allow visitors to inspect the structure from underneath.
The six-span, wrought-iron, truss-girder viaduct - which took three years to build - is 535 feet long and 151 feet high. It is currently owned by the Meldon Viaduct Company Limited.
