点评:Having visited this significant Hawaiian site numerous times on previous visits, about time for a review. Parking and entry are free. The open air visitor center has multiple informative displays. A park ranger is on site, to answer questions, and host a short movie played throughout the day. On this particular visit we went to the gift shop to purchase some unique art work prints. It is the only air conditioned public building on site, and the staff are welcoming and helpful.
The short walk around the sites is not very difficult. You can't enter the Sacred Heiau, but take lots of photos. Periodic restoration of the temple, due to recent fires, floods, and earthquakes, is ongoing. It is also used for an occasional religious, or cultural ceremony. A rare event that indigenous Hawaiians, will actually enter the structure.
Designated as a historic park in 1962, and established on August 8, 1972, The current visitor center and restrooms, were built in 2007. If you have children in the National Park Jr. Ranger program, this is one of many opportunities on the Big Island to earn and collect badges. Nearby Spencer Park offers picnic tables, and a nice beach for relaxation.
Mahalo.
