点评:The Isabell Stewart Gardner Museum contains an eclectic collection of artworks drawn from all over the world, reflecting the eccentric owner's tastes. Isabell was very particular in how she wanted all the artwork she collected over many decades would be displayed in this custom-built 'palace" (holding this Museum). even to the point of specifying how all this was to be displayed after her death. Be sure to pick up the Museum gallery guide when you enter; there are few labels or placards on all this artwork (as Isabell intended), so it's hard to know exactly what an individual artwork was.
As a result, you spend as much time figuring out what Isabell was trying to tell us viewers with her (sometimes unusual) arrangements of her pieces than what the original artist intended with the artwork. The Museum is spread out over three floors in two buildings, so the galleries are large enough to hold many pieces of (loosely) connected art. The original "palace" building - with its large landscaped atrium - is impressive in itself.
One interesting approach to the galleries is to include many of the hand-written correspondence Isabell conducted with art friends, celebrities of that era, etc. These give some ideas what types of art she collected & organized. The Museum also spends time going over how Isabell's personality affected how she saw all this art in many of the gallery signs.
An interesting special exhibition on display while I was there has on Isabell worked to get herself portrayed in (newly invented) photographs & paintings. This exhibition gives you an ideas of the lengths famous persons go to for a particular public image.
This Museum is very close to the Museum of Fine Art, so this is a good choice to seeing classic art displayed in a different way.
