点评:Located in the Locust Point neighborhood, and set in a 42- acre area, this National Park is best known for its role in the War of 1812 during which American troops defeated a British navy Fleet. The site was also the inspiration for Francis Scott Key to pen down the Star-Spangled Banner.
With so much history to appreciate, we just had to stop here on our way home from Baltimore. Looking at the overall size of the actual Fort, it was inconceivable as to how they were able to carry out the massive attacks during that war. The 5-point star shape was certainly an asset, but it does speak volumes about the brave men and women who were there on that fateful night.
As we walked around reading all the plaques, we realized how much history is packed here. Everything has been preserved very well. The grounds are beautifully manicured and maintained.
The Park Rangers there were extremely friendly and gave us additional information. One also pointed out the Francis Scott Key Bridge on the Patapsco River, and the entire section that collapsed after being hit by a container ship last year. We could clearly see the gap and what has remained of the famous, busy bridge. So sad…!
The Visitor Center has been refurbished beautifully. The exhibits and artifacts are wonderful, and the mini video is awe-inspiring.
Do make it a point to visit if you are in the area. Buy a Pass to take the tour. We did and were overcome with emotion.
We were also happy to get our Stamp for the Parks Passport.
