Nashville, Tn. 8/23-8/30 2023.
This is an interesting area in the deep South. Until the 1930's this was a poor, polluted area
that was fought over during the Civil War. Tennessee was the last state to succeed and the
first to rejoin after the war. A good part of the population supported the Yankees and
the rest the Rebels. It was a difficult area to fight over. It was covered with thick woods,
swamps, dirt roads that turned to mud, mountains, yearly huge river floods and HEAT.
We had 5 days with a Heat Index of up to 119 degrees. When the war was over Tennessee was the first state to rejoin the United States. From the War till the 1930's the state made no progress.
With the country in deep depression, Pres. Roosevelt formed the TVA. It had several goals.
First to control the Tennessee River with 6 electricity generating dams which now services
4 states, stop the flooding and to move the area into the 20th century.
TVA has been very successful. The river towns invited in industry and became pollution
centers. Finally the Federal Government stepped in with new pollution laws and forced
the area to clean up the mess. Chattanooga was considered one of the dirtiest cities in the
country. Today, the rover towns are clean and prosperous. Each river town has it’s own
personality. Chattanooga put in free electric buses. They figured each bus would replace
159 cars a day. The many railroads cleaned up their act. Dozens of huge freights hull the towns
each day. Tourism arrived. The area boomed. Nashville gets 10 million tourists a year.
The old flooded river banks became beautiful parks. The National Park Service became a
huge asset. Now there are beautiful river boats on both the Tennessee and Cumberland
Rivers, everyone has electricity, the towns are served by airports and building has gone
wild. Nashville has so much building that 69 huge cranes dot the sky. Anyone who wants to
work can get a job.
This year American Cruise Line opened up a new cruise from Chattanooga to Nashville.
Our boat, American Splendor, was a replica of the steamboats that use to haul cargo up
and down the river. We cruised mostly at night and went ashore during the day.
It was comfortable, the food excellent the crew fully American. Before the TVA dams
went in most of the towns were flooded out. Now with the dams, each town
has several beautiful park.
Day 1 was getting to Chattanooga and over nigh in a hotel. We had 4 busses that
followed the boat and supplied all of our transportation with great local guides.
Always, on the way to the boat we get a local tour. Usually it is spectacular, as
this one was. After touring to town, we followed the theme of Battle Above the
Stars. A major battle took place at Lookout Mountain- We rode up an incline,
visited the National Park Service and went over to Rock City a huge area with
two trails through a gorge with spectacular rock formations. A great start despite
a very hot- 96 degree day. The American Cruise line draws many senior. They
make an active effort to involve them in the town visits with golf carts and busses.
They are actively involved in all activities and getting to the buses. The Line
always start with spectacular and interesting events.
On board, we had a guest lecturer- Captain Tom. A former Tug Skipper who
made interesting history presentations along the river and before each town.
Day 2 took us to Decatur, Al. There was a loop bus, hop and hop off in every town.
Many of us went to the Huntsville huge space center and it got Hotter. The person
who invented air conditioning should be sainted. The buses and bus drivers were
excellent as were the local guides.
As we moved up the Tennessee River we went through several dam/locks
The process always drew a crowd. We saw some animals and several Bald Eagles.
In Florence, Alabama we were introduced to Native American history and the
Trail of Tears. The Native Americans fought over the land with the settlers.
Andrew Jackson rounded them up and forced them to walk to Oklahoma. In later
years some returned and are keeping their history alive. We visited a memorial
site.
As we moved up the river we saw huge farms that raised corn, soybeans and
hay. The crops are then put in huge barges and taken to the Mississippi and
down to Baton Rouge to be shipped around the world. Along the river there are
Huge Grain Elevators to load the crops and a large operation to make Cat Food.
In Savannah, Tenn. We visited the Shiloh Battle Field. The area is heavily
forested, And the site of a deadly Civil War Battle. Over 24,000 were killed.
And it was Hotter.
Grand Rivers,Ky was a neat little river town of about 300. We were toured on
two horse and buggies each pulled by two Draft Horses . A neat way to see their
town. That day the Heat Index was 119.
A few of us went over to Paducah to see the huge mural river wall to protect
the town from the Mississippi flooding. The wall is part of a 12 mile Flood Wall
that has about 70 huge murals relating to the area history and the Mississippi.
They were spectacular. Something unusual happened a rain shower. They also
have a real locomotive and several cars on display. Neat.
The Last stop is Nashville- It is rapidly becoming the a major tourist site
with 10 million people a year, 100 down town Honketonk bars, beautiful
parks and lots of hotels. We docked next to about 6 wear houses that are being
restored and redeveloped. Everything relates to country music and the Grand
Old Opera. Our last stop was a show at Opry.
Both ways the flights both ways were fast. The non stop is just one hour and 30 minutes.
Except for the weather, I would do it again. It is a nice way to travel.
