Cool telescopes, limited amenities, hot in the summer

点评：We took the 11:30 tour of the observatory, which ended up being 2.5 hours. The tour's material ranged from the very basics of astrophysics to slightly technical information about the telescopes themselves. We saw the 60-inch and 100-inch telescopes, as well as two solar telescopes. Both solar telescopes were in operation and we got short talks from their operators. We couldn't look through the big telescopes, as it was daytime, but large groups can rent them at night.
Note that the 2-4pm viewing through small solar telescopes advertised on their website is not happening at this time (July 2024).
The telescopes are worth seeing (and far more impressive than anything you'll find at Griffith Observatory), but...
Check the weather first! It was only in the 80s in LA but near 100 degrees on Mount Wilson. There is no air-conditioning to speak of; the cafe has entirely outdoor seating, though you can buy cold drinks and they kindly provided us some ice to cool down with. There are two water-refill stations and one bathroom building, which is at ambient temperature but has running water. Also be advised that the road up from Pasadena is very winding, and we saw no gas stations along the way.
