圣费兰城堡的点评
点评：This is a fascinating fortress with a chequered history. We booked the guided tour (in English) for the Cathedral of the Water (via the very helpful lady in the Tourist Office in Figueres.) Our tour started with a short introduction by our excellent guide, then we boarded a vintage jeep to drive around the huge moat whilst he pointed out aspects of the construction and defences. We stopped to don hard hats and enter the narrow, lengthy tunnels radiating out under the weakest side of the fortress, where soldiers were stationed to listen for tunnelling invaders.... very atmospheric, dark and potentially claustrophobic! We then drove on, stopping again at points of interest before finishing near the central parade ground. Then the tour got REALLY interesting... down below are vast subterranean cisterns for storing water. Entering through a narrow staircase, hard hats on, we descended, only to climb a 3m vertical ladder to a small platform. Then shoes off(!) and down another shorter ladder into an inflatable boat. Our group of 4 average sized adults plus guide was a snug fit and we had to sit in the bottom of the boat, knees to chin. Why, quickly became clear, as our guide punted us through low archways into other sections of the cistern. Amazingly the water is clear and drinkable although no longer replenished by the aqueduct. After reversing the access process, our guide then left us to continue to explore the inner part of the fortress alone by following the numbered trail. I highly recommend this visit with the advice to think about the agility needed and to wear comfortable clothing and easily removed footwear. At 16€ per adult it was good value as we were there for at least 3 hours in all.
