From Ruins to Refreshment
益吉天然水井的点评
点评：Cenote Ik Kil was absolutely beautiful. We visited right after exploring the Chichén Itzá ruins, and it was the perfect way to cool off on a hot day.
We arrived around 11:00 AM, and it was still fairly quiet. The parking lot was mostly empty, and we were able to enjoy the cenote without the crowds. By the time we left—just after noon—the place was packed with tour buses, so arriving earlier definitely made a difference.
The descent to the cenote is scenic but a bit uncomfortable heading down the stone steps barefoot. Shoes aren’t allowed, although I believe water shoes might be permitted, but one visitor mentioned she was told she couldn’t wear hers. Flip flops are not allowed. You put your belongings in a locker, then you're required to rinse off in the showers (sunscreen is not good for the cenotes) and you must wear a life jacket, as the cenote is about 80 meters deep.
Once you reach the bottom, the sight is breathtaking. When the sunlight filters in, it illuminates the cool, crystal-clear water. Looking up, you see long vines cascading from the opening above—it feels magical. Small fish swim around you, and the water is so refreshing.
We swam for about an hour. It was peaceful at first, but as more people arrived, it felt crowded, and I enjoyed it less. If possible, go early for a more serene experience.
There are many cenotes to choose from in Mexico, but Ik Kil’s proximity to Chichén Itzá made it a convenient and memorable stop. Afterward, we continued on to Valladolid for a delicious lunch of traditional Yucatecan fare at El Atrio del Mayab—a perfect end to a well-paced day.
