点评:Dad was keen to see the paintings by Joseph Wright and there was an additional special exhibition when we went, so it worked out really well. Wright brilliantly captures the way a small, bright source of light illuminates a scene which is otherwise dark. The painting of two boys fighting over a toy, having knocked over a candle, was striking, not only for its execution but also the unusual subject. We really enjoyed the art gallery. The labelling was good and there was a booklet with more information, and an audio-guide for even more.
There are other sections to the museum, which are also interesting; as is the old part of the building itself, a peep through a window showing shelves and shelves of items not on open display.
The café makes a nice coffee and scones, among other offerings. Staff were welcoming and helpful. There is no entry fee - but do make a donation if you can, to help keep places like this open and accessible to all.
