Haunting ghostly figures trapped in a desert wasteland

点评：The ghost town of Rhyolite probably owes a lot of its visitors today to the nearby vicinity of this museum. Since they are so close to each other, it makes perfect sense to stop and check them both out. This is especially the case if you also plan to go onto Death Valley National Park also in the area.
The Last Supper, by Polish-born Belgian sculptor Albert Szukalski, was the first art piece of the museum installed here in the high desert 40 some years ago in 1984. It's supposed to be illuminated with multicolored lighting at night although I cannot confirm since I visited during daylight hours. The Death Valley location for this sculpture was purposely chosen due to its symbolism. "Perhaps thousands had their last meal here before embarking across that forbidding desert," Szukalski once remarked.
Another surviving Szukalski sculpture, also from 1984, is called Ghost Rider. This is the solo ghost figure preparing to mount a bicycle. This outdoor museum's other three of the original five sculptures are 1) Lady Desert: Venus of Nevada by Dr. Hugo Heyrman in 1992, 2) Icara by Dre Peeters in 1992, and 3) Tribute to Shorty Harris by Fred Bervoets in 1994. Besides all these, there are supposed to be at least nine other pieces scattered around the area. Good luck finding them all. The building at the site is the Visitor Center and Gift Shop which is open Mon-Sat 10a-4p except in the summer when they close at 2p due to the heat. The best time of the year to visit this FREE and one of a kind museum is October to May.
