Dinosaurs, Local history and more!
Ste. Genevieve Museum Learning Center的点评
点评:I had been to Guy Darrough's setup at the Mayfield School in Marble Hill several times, and followed the story of the move. Went to the new Museum this morning and I was positively overwhelmed and appreciative. This, of course, is *the* home of the Missouri dinosaur Parrosaurus missourienses. Paleontology is the focus of the main Museum chamber-- which has life-sized recreations artfully mixed with replica and real fossils, large boulders of significant rocks and mineral, a geologic time line told by fossils, a glassed in research area where Mike Fix talks to visitors about his dental tool excavations.
Upstairs is a gallery telling the story of the Missouri Parrosaurus, a gallery of St. Genevieve artifacts and a larger space with various natural and human history cases, told with many many artifacts on display. Some cases are a bit crowded, (like treasures found below an outhouse) but everything is well laid out. There is also a gallery dedicated to the local mining industry...would have liked to have had a case on the local salt making works.
This museum has a little of everything for everyone from 5 year olds on up. I had a discussion with one of the docents about my family who settled in the area in the 1850s--have some common family with his wife. Usually the last Wednesday of the month they have a fossil ID day when people can bring in their finds.
Definitely recommended for people interested in both science and local/Midwest human history. $10 admission for adults, and $8 for older kids is very reasonable for what you get. The gift shop is oriented to kids...it could have a few more things to appeal to grownups.
