点评:The Adelaide Gaol was well worth a visit. It's very difficult to get to by foot from the city as there is lots of construction going on near the hospital, so it's a fair walk from the tram stop. The tip is to wear good shoes.
You receive a warm welcome upon arrival and a helpful map.
It is very shocking and sobering to think that the gaol was still operational in 1988 when it closed. It opened in 1841...and didnt seem any different to back then.
You can really get immersed in what it might have been like for the prisoners and hear their stories along the way.
The most eerie parts of the gaol were knowing the cells where people who were executed were kept and the primitive conditions.
45 people, men and women, were executed here, the last in 1964.
Reading about their wrap sheets its clear some were open and shut cases, but many were in the grey area and most likely would have not been executed under todays legal system.
The gallows and trap door was very confronting, standing where people met the end. Also, the makers where their remain lay.
I would have given a five for this, but we were taken aback to see a bus load of young preschoolers and kindies on a vacation trip. They were running around screaming and oblivious to the nature of this place. Also, its horrifying to know they have kids' birthday parties here...I just dont get it..its a mass grave site!
Anyway, you can be the judge, but hopefully, when you go, you can reflect quietly in peqc
