点评:Atlatl Rock was the last stop on my tour and earned second place on my fave list thanks to its petroglyphs — so cool to see.
Named after a prehistoric spear‑thrower because many of the petroglyphs include carved figures that resemble people using atlatls.
You climb 84 steps up a metal walkway to reach the rock face of 4,000‑year‑old Native American petroglyphs and sweeping park views.
One person in my group pointed out a few glyphs that looked like UFOs — they really do.
When my group arrived we had the place to ourself so we had time to take photos at our leisure.
My guide said a concrete pad was poured at the base of the Atlatl Rock stairs to securely anchor the metal staircase and viewing platform.
When you come face to face with the petroglyph panel, it’s both amazing and a little unsettling to realize the rock stood on its own for centuries before that concrete was added, eroded by the weather and passage of time.
A few people kept remarking on how the Native Americans made it all the way up here on their own to create the carvings.
I’m sure they were far more skilled and comfortable at climbing the rocks and navigating the terrain.
