点评:This was an interesting museum. The entrance is a bit hidden (I had to ask at the next-door building for directions), but there are signs if you look carefully for them. I came to the museum from downtown by bus, which is easy with Google maps and a Suica card, if you have one. The closest bus stop is one to two blocks from the museum, depending on the bus you take.
I had heard about the Kobe earthquake, but didn't have any idea how destructive an earthquake can be. The displays, and especially the theatre films, gave an excellent introduction to what happened, and how the destruction occurred. The little vignettes about how people were affected by the earthquake were poignant; after this, the tour around the museum was more meaningful, as it explained how damage could be minimized.
The museum uses a timed entry ticket to limit the number of people in the museum (you are given an entry time when you buy your ticket at the door), but the wait until entry was only about 10 minutes.
There is a little cafe on the ground floor which serves good lunches at a reasonable price. You can point at their menu to explain what you want, although the servers did speak some English and communication was not difficult.
I walked back to the downtown from the museum, rather than taking the bus back. Along the nearby waterfront it's an enjoyable walk. The waterfront walkways and parks are easily accessible from the south exit of the museum lobby. From there it's about a 2 km walk to downtown. Almost all the waterfront from the museum to the downtown is developed as a waterfront park.
