Combine with Visit to Clovelly Village
Clovelly Court Gardens的点评
点评：We only stopped by to have a look because we were nearby, visiting Clovelly village. The garden is not actually in the village itself but up the road at Clovelly Court.
It's only a minor sight but it’s worth a quick look if you are already in the area.
What you see here is a restored Victorian walled garden. Traditionally walled gardens like this belonged to a large household and supplied the house and its staff with all of its fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs. This one was attached to the Clovelly Manor which still stands nearby (although its privately owned so you cant go in).
As we walked through the garden, it was easy to imagine Victorian kitchen maids in starched white aprons and mob caps uniforms coming down to the garden to pick the potatoes, beans and cabbages, and perhaps apples, peaches and figs, for the dinner table. All of these were grown here during that time.
The surrounding walls were built in the 18th century to protect the plants against harsh coastal winds and we guessed probably from marauding wildlife and thieves. Interestingly, the walls also helped trap the sun’s heat, creating a warmer environment that helped the plants grow.
We walked past the ancient, gnarled Judas tree, through a pretty archway and wandered along the narrow gravel paths that divided the garden beds.
More exotic plants are still being grown in the original glass house. In Victorian times many regular fruits were regarded as exotic.
The garden looked prettier in photos but of course everything here is grown organically and is seasonal and I think we were not seeing it at its best.
Entry is £5 but if like us, you have already paid to go into Clovelly village (£9.90), then the garden is included in your fee. In fact we didn’t see anybody around and no-one asked us to show our ticket.
