点评:My husband and I spent a magical half day on Lismore, touring with Iris and sheepherding with Arthur. It was one of the highlights of our 3-week tour through Scotland. Iris and her husband live on the tiny island -- his family has been there for generations -- and they run tours of this very special place. Less than 200 people live on Lismore and it felt like a place that time forgot, in a good way. For two New Yorkers and lifetime urbanites, it looked and felt like paradise: wide-open spaces, gorgeous vistas, spanking clean, charming, thatched roof cottages, and so much more.
Iris met us at the ferry and we explored the island in her range rover, peppering her with questions about its history and what it's like to live there, and enjoying a tailgate snack of coffee and homemade cake. She dropped us at the island's cafe for a visit to its small museum and shop, where we had a great lunch before meeting Arthur for a sheepherding experience. We tramped through the open fields, breathing the cleanest air we've likely ever enjoyed, lulled by the gorgeous surroundings as Arthur's two energetic dogs moved the sheep -- including some new moms and babies -- across the fields. It was a great day in all respects.
If you can, be sure to add Explore Lismore to your itinerary. It is an unusual experience and one you'll likely always remember.
