点评：The Overton Park Shell, formerly called the Levitt Shell, Shell Theater and Memphis Open Air Theater, is an open-air amphitheater and museum located at 1928 Poplar Avenue in Memphis' Overton Park. Built in 1936 as part of FDR's New Deal, it was modeled after similar shells in Chicago, New York and St. Louis. Of 27 band shells constructed by the Works Progress Administration (WPA), it is one of only a few that still remain. It is best known as the venue where Elvis Presley gave his first paid concert on July 30, 1954. Presley opened for headliner Slim Whitman and performed what music historians described as the first-ever rock and roll show. In the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, the Overton Park Shell was saved from demolition on three occasions. After completion of state-of-the-art renovations in 2008, free concerts once again held in the Shell. Today, concerts are conducted on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the spring and fall. On weekends in the summer, the Shell presents free concert films for the public.
