An Unexpected Gem of local history!
Ursulines Monastery的点评
点评：As with lots of places in the villages the signs are not the best when trying to find your place of interest! You have to keep going, down steps, through passageways etc until you get to your destination! When we ultimately got to the monastery it was closed, it’s very run down and you start to think you have had a wasted journey! We followed signs for a cafe which took us along one side of the monastery and decided to head there for a coffee. The waiter was very helpful and surprised when we said it was closed. He explained that some ladies who help at the monastery had also just had coffee and had just left, so the assumption was that it would soon be open!
Great, when we walked back the door was open and we were greeted by a volunteer, it cost 3 Euro’s each to go inside and that included being shown around, which was fantastic to see the rooms, contents etc, plus the volunteer guide gave us a good history lesson. Sadly the structure of the monastery is in decline as you can no longer go upstairs as the floors are not safe and part of the roof now leaks! They don’t get any money from the Catholic Church to keep the monastery in good order and rely purely on the 3 euro entrance fee and the volunteers who give their time. You can also make a voluntary donation at the end of your tour.
So, it was well worth the effort to find the monastery from the car park and the guide was very knowledgeable and she gave us a good insight of life there until it closed, quite moving to hear the stories. FYI, THEY TRY TO OPEN BETWEEN THE HOURS OF 10am AND 3pm, BUT AS THEY ARE DEPENDENT UPON VOLUNTEERS, TIMES CAN VARY. Well worth the 5 Star rating.
