Nice hike down to crater.
Pululahua Volcano & Geobotanical Reserve的点评
点评：This dormant volcanic crater was formed 2500 years ago when the cone collapsed after frequent eruptions expelled all the magma. The Crater caldera is 4km wide. Looking at the hills surrounding the crater, it is hard to fathom how enormous the original volcano was.
Pululahua is one of only two inhabited volcanic craters in the world. A small community farms over 19 square miles of the fertile soil at the bottom of this dormant volcano.
It is free to hike. Hikers are supposed to register at the top, but there was no one there to do it that morning. There are a few hiking options here.
Ventanillas Trail:
This 2km dirt and rock trail begins at the Pululahua Mirador near the Crater Hotel and winds down to the bottom. It takes about 30min to walk down, but 1hr - 2hrs to slog BACK UP the steep 350 meters rise over the short 2km.
Tip: Go EARLY TO AVOID the fog that quickly blankets the crater every afternoon (around 1pm).
There is a road to the reach the bottom by car - Moraspungo Rd. I'm not sure how long it takes to drive down, though.
At the bottom, you can hike to the top of El Chivo (1.3km) or Pondoña (2.7km). There's also a short trail to a thermal spring behind the Pondoña Dome.
*Be aware that there aren't any stores, restaurants, restrooms, etc. at the bottom. Use the restroom at the top near the mirador. A few houses sell drinks, and some sell food in the high season.
*I think there are horses, but check first if you plan to take one. I didn't see any the day I went. No taxis, Uber, or cell phone reception, so hike early before it's hot, bring water, a snack / sandwich, a hat, and sunscreen.
I enjoyed it. It was beautiful. I recommend seeing this crater and doing this hike before Laguna Quilotoa.
*There's a small museum just down the road called Temple of the Sun. It is not related to this crater.
