Best Hike in Indiana Dunes National Park and All Indiana as Well-MUST DO

点评：This is AllTrails #1 hike in the state of Indiana and our favorite hike and activity in Indiana Dunes NP. This the hike that really shows off the plant diversity of this park with marshes, bog, forest, thickets and shorelines. While the park is known for its botany, there is much wildlife to see as well. We saw two snakes, one crossing the trail just after starting. In addition, one of the bog marches have beaver damns that are east to see from the trail.
This is a great hike but there are some things you will not expect from a National Park. It is rate to hike in the shadow of power generation chimneys and with the constant hum of a operation steel plant. In addition you can see the skyline of Chicago just across Lake Michigan.
For hikers, the numbers won't impress you at 4.3 miles and 216 vertical feet. However, nearly all of this hike, expect for the boardwalk, is sand. This makes the hike so much more challenging when crossing the dune ridge closest to the lake. This ridge is about 100 vertical feet cross to the lake and leaving and both places will take the wind out of you. Again the pictures will not seem to show that much elevation; however, the track in sand will take it out of you. We hiked clockwise as the west ridge is much steeper that allow us to walk down to the beach. Finally the sand is not all bad, the hike down is much less painful with sand.
Again this is the best hike in Indiana Dunes NP and Indiana for that matter. If you enjoy plants and diversity this is your place, ferns, flowers, grasses, trees sedge and vines. The pictures will not do it justice. You need to make this hike. AND dump your shoes before you get back in your car.
