The “Palace” is amazing; the tour is not

点评：King’s Palace is an ornate room in Carlsbad Caverns, along with two smaller rooms, that can only be seen via a guided tour. There are only a few dozen tickets available per day and they sell out literally immediately upon release 30 days in advance. I was lucky to get one and to see the wonderful King’s Palace. But at 90 minutes, the tour was agonizingly long, and was mostly sitting in the rooms as the guide droned on endlessly. Some of the information was interesting, but I came to Carlsbad to see the caverns, not listen to lectures about the caverns while sitting in them. The Natural Entrance and Big Room self-guided tours constituted 90% of what I saw at Carlsbad and took me less than two hours to explore - while taking many photos and reading all the signs. The 10% that was the King’s Palace took about the same time considering the time to assemble and walk back and forth to it. This should be a 30-45 minute tour. And if it were shorter, the NPS could offer 2-3x as many tours so more people could see these rooms.
