点评:Wednesday 15th Oct 2025 - Weather - Cloudy and dry with no wind - A very pleasant evening weather-wise!
I last visited three years ago and after seeing a local TV news item, (BBC North West), about some negative reviews about the 2025 display I decided to visit again this year. Sadly the negative reviews were right.
I like to walk through the illuminations and this was the first time in a couple of years that I had done so and found the whole experience very underwhelming.
In many places it just consists of just strings of multi-coloured LED bulbs along the road. There are a few places where illuminated "pictures" hang from lamp-posts , mainly at the southern part of the prom.
The northern end has the famous large tableaus located on the grass the other side of the tram tracks. If you have been any time in the past 40 years you will remember them as they are all the same although there are a couple missing this year and at least one new one. But this part of the prom desperately needs refreshing - even if they used giant LED TV screens .
The area around the North Pier/talbot Square area is completely devoid of any illuminations at all, it was like sitting in a black hole! I had some, (excellent!), chips at the chip shop at the front of the North Pier and sat on the picnic tables in relative darkness compared to the rest of the prom. It didn't even feel like the illuminations were switched on!
Just south of the North Pier, at the base of the Tower was where the "Lightpool" is located - a sparse collection of a handful of illuminated LED lit constructions, a bird, a tunnel etc that can be walked around and through. Young children might enjoy them but I was left with the impression that the designers couldn't really be bothered.
The Tower however was, (almost), as impressive as ever! (It was disappointing that there was one section of seaward facing top section that was not working). However, from a distance Blackpool Tower looks stunning with its vibrant colour-changing multi-patterned displays - probably best appreciated from about halfway along the North Pier, (which bizarrely closes about 20:00hrs about 2 to 3 hours before the illuminations switch off for the night).
The area below the Tower was probably the most vibrant and busy part of the illuminations as there is a projected light show on the building at the base of the Tower.
The promenade traffic was relatively light, (Wednesday mid-October) and by about 20:00hrs it was flowing freely in both directions.
The promenade section between the South Pier and the Central Pier takes pedestrians and walkers quite a way from the road and illuminations and is very dark with uneven slopes and invisible tripping hazards. There are no lights at all in parts and great care must be taken. It is used by joggers, cyclists, scooters and of course walkers and pedestrians etc. Families with young children and elderly people should be very careful in this area - why there is no lighting in this area is a mystery as it can be quite disconcerting in the pitch darkness in parts and tricky if you are a slow walker. At least a string of lights sunk into the concrete should be installed to illuminate the path, or strung overhead.
I walked from Bispham, (at the north end), to the southern limit, a distance of 6 miles and it took about 3 hours at a gentle stroll, stopping for refreshments at the North Pier, in that time I only saw 1 illuminated tram, (the trawler), which past me twice although the regular tram service was running these were a lot less frequent than they used to be, although if travelling to the resort by train there is now a tram stop at Blackpool NORTH Station with services to the north end of the lights and the south end. (Note that trains to Blackpool South are ideal if you are wanting to walk from the southern end of the lights - alight at Squires Gate Station, note - NO DISABLED ACCESS at Squires Gate as it is a steep set of steps - use the next "Pleasure Beach" station for level access - both unmanned stations). It is a short 1 minute walk to the prom from both stations
Regarding the tram service, I remember that there was always two or three trams always in sight whichever way you looked along the promenade, a mixture of double-deck and single deck trams at very frequent intervals - now there are long time periods between the single-deck trams and when they turn up they are full and standing from the Pleasure Beach to Bispham.
(If you want to view the illuminations from an ordinary tram DON'T travel on one with an "all-over-advert" as you wont get a clear view out of the window due to the advert covering the windows!).
However, even on the ordinary non-advert trams the view is poor due to the ill-thought-out seating arrangement.
Basically there were not enough trams running even though it was mid-week in October.
The illuminated Tram needs to be pre-booked apparently - good luck with that as it only appeared to do a couple of round trips with about 30 or 40 passengers on it.
There used to be, many years ago, several of these illuminated trams plus ordinary heritage trams doing illuminations tours with some of the trams having additional lighting on them, all adding to the special atmosphere along the promenade.
In the 3 or so hours I was there I didn't see any of the heritage trams at all which was a huge disappointment, the modern trams are character-less, dark, silent and almost invisible! However they are suitable for all abilities with wheelchair access.
I understand that the council want to severely restrict, or ban the heritage trams altogether! In my view they are as much a part of Blackpool as the Tower!
The open-top trams that used to operate on the prom were ideal for seeing the illuminations!). The modern trams, whilst being functional people movers do the illuminations a huge disservice by not allowing passengers to actually see the displays!
In conclusion the Blackpool Illuminations were disappointing, underwhelming lacking in the atmosphere that that there used to be and not really worthy of a long drive down the motorway you could get more pleasure from a set of coloured bulbs at home or climbing to the top of a local hill and looking at the brightly lit Blackpool Tower through binoculars!
I feel that even giving a two star review is probably being generous!
Come on Blackpool You could do a lot better than this!!!
