A Tale of Two Steves
The Etches Collection的点评
点评：From the outside, ‘The ‘Etches Collection’ building promises treasures within its beautiful stone facade… a promise it does not keep, like a Lamborghini body with a Ford Fiesta engine.
I arrived at opening time,10am after a very long drive, so excited to see the on-loan ‘Big Sara’ the Allosaurus and of course their Pliosaur. While waiting until 2pm to enter so that the school children could finish their visit I went to the beach and chatted with the locals about the museum.
“Have you been to the museum, is it interesting?” I asked.
“If you are really, REALLY into fossils you might find it interesting but it's pretty much just one room” was the polite reply.
So 2pm arrives, I go in. As soon as you enter it feels as if you’ve entered a council building, like a modern inner-city school or registry office. The reception area is right next to a huge merchandise area, behind that there is another huge space for admin staff, opposite is a large room with several chairs facing a television where I see a couple watching what looks like a programme on natural history. I pay for my ticket while being told that I can buy the DVD of the Sir David Attenborough™ programme about the “Sea Rex”.
I enter a relatively small, bright lit room at the top of the stairs, I go through a pair of regulation fire doors, look down and there’s the skull of “Sea Rex” as featured in the Sir David Attenborough™ programme, so I’m told. It is predictably spectacular, a truly beautiful specimen. I circle it, admiring every detail of this wonderfully preserved creature.
Luckily, the fossil needs no frills or added sense of drama, because the room doesn’t have any, the bright white walls have hand written font ‘information’ that not only isn’t very informative but not entertaining either. In a small hut which is where this collection was previously housed, I’m sure it was very impressive, in this huge building it looks pitiful. Most offensive of all is that Steve Etches MBE and co decided that now you’ve dragged your kids to a museum to see something real, they’re going to put ‘QR’ codes on every other description to get your child to stare at their phone while standing in front of 140 million year old fossils.
This museum is a perfect example of how people spend other people’s money, I expect using terms like ‘digital’ and ‘interactive’ are keywords when applying for lottery funding. Somehow, they have acquired funding to expand their already oversized museum, heaven forbid they should remove some of the televisions to fit the body of the beast in.
Whilst the website has been updated to show the times of the school trips, housing the school visits in the room that your £3 million on-loan Allosaurus is in tells you all you need to know about how this place is run. When I looked in the room there was a white projection screen in front of the specimen, it's not like the kids were studying the bones all day.
When I finally got to see the Allosaurus, it was clear that it was one the most beautifully preserved theropods I’ve ever seen. Through the noise of two children smashing though the ‘educational toys’ left on a table in front of ‘Big Sara’ and over the din of a volunteer, in serious need of training, loudly telling a guest how satisfying it is volunteering, I managed to at least see the beast I’d travelled six hours to enjoy. Quite why it wasn’t displayed in the middle of this large room so that interested viewers could see all 360 degrees instead of being squeezed again the back wall in an undecorated room full of blue chairs and tables, I don’t know. If I was James Benamor, I would not be happy with how my precious purchase had been displayed.
So dear reader, instead of wasting your time travelling to Kimmeridge, I recommend you go to Lyme Regis where you can see both Lyme Regis museum, a beautiful Victorian building with Mary Anning’s letters along with some of her greatest finds. Go to the truly inspiring Dinosaurland, Steve Davies’ truly incredible collection without a penny of funding, it’s housed in the Chapel that Mary Anning was baptised in. You could walk in as a novice and leave as an expert in prehistoric life. Every inch of Dinosaurland is filled with specimens, every information sheet is written by Steve Davies himself, it’s both humorous and informative. If only the Natural History Museum in London was in such good hands.
In conclusion, I would not recommend that you take your family to The Etches Collection, you will be very disappointed, if you are a die-hard Dino nerd, like me, be prepared, other than the ‘Sea Rex’, you’d be better off spending your money elsewhere.
