点评:The Coral Geographer carries a maximum of 120 guests and was fully booked
from Tokyo to Fukuoka. Having visited Japan many times before, we took this
cruise to see the places that you can't easily get to on the Shinkansen and we
were well rewarded. In almost every port we were met by enthusiastic locals
from the mayor to the Junior High School band - not arranged by Coral but to
show their enthusiasm for expanding tourism. In general Coral and its shore
agents arranged bus trips to local highlights, including plenty of walks for the
more energetic guests but many cultural experiences for others who might
have difficulty on rough terrain. This was only Coral's second cruise on this
route and there are a few improvements that could be made.
Ship: The CG's sister ship, Coral Adventurer has proper chairs for sitting at the
desk. For some reason, CG only has a footstool which is too low and has no
back support. Discussing this with the purser just before the end of the voyage,
he said that we could have asked for a proper chair. My advice to anyone over
60 or who has back problems is ask for this at the start of the voyage.
Otherwise the ship was very comfortable and the stabilisers worked well
although we had a couple of rough nights
Food: Dinner was good but unless you are particularly fond of cold fried eggs
with a white sauce, breakfast was disappointing. Instead of sticking to simple
fried or boiled eggs, they provided a different cooked breakfast every day - all
cold (or at least for the first few days after which I gave up.) They had good
porridge but only once every five days. They produced Muesli every day. The
bread was out of a packet (marked best before July 2025) but no rolls and
some very greasy croissants which hadn't been reheated properly.
Destinations: A number of port visits were just too short for the number of
attractions. We could happily have spent a day on Miyajima but we had to be
back at the pier by 11 am for the ship to move to Hiroshima. Likewise Ishiteji
was dropped from the schedule for Matsuyama in order to set sail for Karatsu
by 1 pm. My solution to this would have been to drop Kobe and Hiroshima from
the itinerary. These are places easily reached by Shinkansen from either
Fukuoka or Tokyo and could have been arranged as pre-/post- trip excursions.
People who went on the bus to Kyoto from Kobe told me that they only had two
hours actually in Kyoto. Simply not worth it. We took the train from Kobe to
Osaka, visited the castle and had lunch with a friend
