点评：Like fountains, Basel has several amazing squares and public gathering spaces, but this was my favorite. This is beautiful public space directly behind the Basel Minster on a terrace overlooking the Rhine River. While the Rheinufer in Klein Basel is great public space to view the river and the city, this place was the best river overlook in the city, either Klein or Gross Basel. Part of it is there is nowhere on the Rhine in Basel where you are this elevated, and part of it is nowhere else can you get such sweeping views of Klein Basel all the way to the Black Forest of Germany for free. Another thing that distinguishes the space is that it has trees which provide shade on a warm summer day.
We had the opportunity to visit the Pfalz multiple times during our visit because the views are that good. Every time we visited there were dozens of people here enjoying this place. On our first visit, after taking pictures, we descended the stairs behind it to catch the "Leu" ferry to go to the other side. That is another fun experience, see the post. It is also a fun place to watch the hundreds of Basel citizens looking to beat the heat by floating down the Rhine River, see that post. Finally, this place is made for pictures with amazing backdrops like the Middle Bridge, the Roche Towers, and the German mountains of the Schwartzwald.
This place is that good that you need to make it a priority to visit. The only thing that shocks me is that this space is so low in the rankings below other public spaces like the Marktplatz and Munsterplatz that are nice but nowhere as incredible as the Pfalz. This place is special for Basel.
